Pre-Vet Camp Mentors

Shanna Gage
Bay Area Equine (BAE) Pre-Vet Program, Director

Shanna Gage is an avid equestrian who found her passion early in life. For more than thirty years, Shanna’s love for horses has taken her on many wonderful journeys. Shanna a Bay Area native, born in San Francisco, currently lives at the base of Mount Diablo, in the heart of Walnut Creek’s horse community with her two children. She is an international award winning horse rider and breeder. Her notable accomplishments as a rider include three Arabian Horse Association’s National Champion titles. She is heavily active in spearheading and leading numerous community outreach programs for youth whom are interested in veterinary medicine. Her projects, seek to engage traditionally underrepresented groups in the veterinary medicine profession and have a global reach. In addition to the curriculum/workshop-saturated program, BAE Pre-Vet Program provides volunteer leadership training for young people. Shanna Gage is the co-founder and director of the BAE Pre-Vet Program, she is also the co-founder and serves on the Board of Directors for the Bay Area Equestrian Club, a nonprofit organization.


Dr. Jamie Textor, DVM PhD Dipl ACVS ACVSMR
BAE Pre-Vet Program Expert Mentor

Dr. Jamie Textor is a board-certified specialist in both Large Animal Surgery and Veterinary Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation. She graduated from Colorado State University in 1998 and completed her residency at Cornell in 2002. Dr. Textor worked in universities (Massey University, Oregon State University, UC Davis) for 10 years doing surgery, treating patients, teaching, and doing research. After earning her PhD in 2013, she was ready to get back to treating patients full-time, and founded Total Performance Equine in 2014. Her vision for the practice was to bring referral-hospital expertise out to the field—along with excellent patient care and client service—and that remains our practice goal every day. Dr. Textor lives in Martinez with her family. She loves all things active and outdoors, serves her community through Rotary, and fits in a riding lesson whenever possible!



Jill Sherman
BAE Pre-Vet Program Expert Mentor

Jill Sherman. Jill studied at Colorado State University and has been breeding champion Arabian horses for over 35 years. What started out as a hobby, quickly grew into a passion as Jill found her love for horses evolve into a breeding, showing, and selling operation. Sherman Ranch is situated on 145 picturesque acres in the San Fransisco/Bay Area. Students will meet several of the most beautiful and talented foals, broodmares and stallions in the world!


Ann Ramsey
BAE Pre-Vet Program Expert Mentor

Ann Ramsey will hold an equine rehabilitation and hoof care workshop this summer. Ann Ramsey BS, CERA graduated with a degree in Animal Science from Calpoly, SLO in 2006. She has worked with horses for over 20 years. Ann is a dressage competitor in her free time.


Melissa Paich
BAE Pre-Vet Program Expert Mentor

Melissa is currently attending Cal Poly as an Animal Science major on the pre-vet track. She is on the Cal Poly Dressage Show Team and is a member of the Foaling Enterprise. Melissa has always been involved with animals and started riding horses at the age of seven. She has wanted to be a vet for her entire life and is excited to continue learning and gaining experience before vet school.

UC Davis Workshop with Jamie Textor, DVM

The Large Animal Clinic at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH), is one of the largest veterinary hospitals in the country. The Large Animal Clinic offers their clients the highest level of care for their equine and livestock animals. Led by board-certified veterinary specialists, the Large Animal Clinic treats thousands of patients a year. The VMTH is an active, working hospital where patients undergo surgical procedures and receive various medical treatments. Providing services ranging from simple farrier services and soundness evaluations to the most complex surgeries needed, the Large Animal Clinic can fulfill all equine and livestock needs. BAE Pre-Vet Program students have the opportunity to take part in viewing emergency care, and regularly scheduled appointments. BAE Pre-Vet Program students report year after year that the exclusive behind the scenes workshop led by Jamie Textor, DVM is a valuable once in a lifetime experience and the highlight of our program! The Large Animal Clinic faculty veterinarians are some of the most skilled and experienced clinicians available.



Peninsula Equine Medical Center

Students will learn about nuclear scintigraphy. Peninsula Equine Medical Center is proud to have one of only two bone scan machines in all of Northern California. This diagnostic tool aids in locating the source or sources of difficult or multi-limb lamenesses. Students will also learn about chiropractic and acupuncture alternative medicine, state of the art diagnostics and cutting edge sports medicine therapy. The surgery suite is fully equipped for both orthopedic and soft tissue procedures, as well as for emergency and elective uses. Students will have the opportunity to tour the Peninsula Surgery Suite, view a thorough full mouth examination, and learn about advance dentistry.



Reproduction Workshop with Jill Sherman

Students will gain an understanding of: Stallion management, Care of the pregnant mare, Breeding management, Reproductive anatomy and physiology of the mare, Artificial insemination, Mare reproductive evaluation, Estrus detection, fertilization and pregnancy, Pregnancy diagnosis, twinning and early embryonic loss as well as Advanced technologies in reproduction.



Stanford University Workshop

Before Stanford became a world class university, it was a horse farm that produced champion racehorses. Stanford is still affectionately called “The Farm,” and the barn still operates to this day. Today, the Stanford Red Barn is home to the Stanford Equestrian Team, the Stanford Red Barn Equestrian Center, and their affiliated programs. At BAE Pre-Vet Program’s Stanford Workshop students will gain an understanding about Stanford’s Equestrian Team, and the veterinary needs of their equine athletes. An exclusive tour will be given by Stanford Equestrian Team members!
